Sometimes we must look in the mirror when it comes to advice.

For me, downtime is something I struggle with.

I don’t mean rest or taking breaks.

My days are full of little breaks, walks, and getting plenty of sleep.

What I struggle with is periods of time without work or a “project”.

In my head, there is always a restless feeling that I need to be doing something.

Laddered on that, I love a good project (work or personal) and the sense of accomplishment that comes with completion.

Days with “nothing” to do are challenging for me.

Yet, I realize the importance of taking a break.

So, I’m going to try something new.

Scheduling downtime.

Putting days on the calendar with no work and no projects.

These aren’t vacation days and I don’t plan to go anywhere in particular.

These are days I will let unfold as they may.

Allow the space for serendipity.

I may even schedule some weeks away from writing around the holidays.

Start small and see what happens.

Your Turn

How are you at taking downtime?

Do you have the space in your life to let the unexpected in?
