Project managers have a saying:

Fast, good, cheap — pick two.

It’s a reminder that in any project, you can rarely have all three at once.

If you want something fast and good, it won’t be cheap.

If you want it good and cheap, it won’t be fast. And so on.

Lately, I’ve been wondering if we have our own version of this in life.

Instead of speed, quality, and cost, what if our triangle was time, money, and energy?

The Three Resources That Shape Everything

We all have limits on how much time, money, and energy we can access in each moment.

They’re the raw materials we use to build our days, reach our goals, and enjoy our lives.

Time: Our calendar space. the hours we control and how we choose to fill them.

Money: Gives us access to buy tools, experiences, or help that expands our options.

Energy: Our capacity includes physical health, mental focus, creativity, & emotional stamina.

When one runs low, the other two often suffer.

Plenty of money and time won’t help if you’re too drained to enjoy them.

Energy and time won’t get you far if you lack the resources to act.

Money and energy won’t feel satisfying if you never have a free hour to use them.

The Life Stage Lens

I think it’s interesting that when we zoom out over decades, a pattern emerges.

Life StageCommon PairMissing Third
Early adulthoodTime + EnergyMoney
Mid-life / career peakMoney + EnergyTime
Later years / retirementTime + MoneyEnergy

In our 20s and 30s, we often have the time and energy to explore, but not the financial freedom to do it fully.

In our 40s and 50s, money and health are often stronger, but time is in short supply.

Later in life, time and financial stability may return, but energy can start to fade.

Seeing life this way shifts the question from:

How do I get all three?

To:

Which one needs the most attention right now?

Energy Is More Than Health

When we talk about energy, we often think only of long-term health.

But energy management also happens inside a single day.

Our personal capacity fluctuates:

Sleep sets our baseline.

Nutrition fuels focus and stamina.

Movement keeps us alert and engaged.

Breaks reset our mental clarity.

And timing matters.

Our individual peak hours may be early morning, mid-afternoon, or late at night.

By protecting and replenishing energy throughout the day, we can create “sweet spots” where time, money, and energy align.

Even if only for an afternoon.

Finding the Sweet Spot

The project management triangle says you can’t have all three and that’s often true.

But in life, the goal isn’t perfection, it’s alignment. You can intentionally:

  • Prioritize two in the current season
  • Maintain the third just enough to prevent burnout or loss
  • Rotate focus as life stage or needs shift

Sometimes, we’ll hit that rare, magical point where you have time to do what you want, the money to make it possible, and the energy to truly enjoy it.

Those moments are worth noticing and aspiring to design more of.

Your Turn

Which two are strongest for you right now?  Time, money, or energy?

And what’s one small change you could make this week to strengthen the third?

Have you experienced other times in your life when one of the others was weakest?
