I wish I could get the message across to people who are busy and employed.

Take the time to build your brand.

The job market is unstable.

Top performers are getting layoff notices.

Executives.

Entry level.

Long tenure.

Short tenure.

No one is safe.

Including you.

What to Do?

Do the work now. You might be surprised at the positive impact they can also have on your current work when you know yourself better and celebrate the strengths you bring.

Update Your Resume.

If you haven’t put your latest role(s) on there, get them added so it’s on the shelf just in case you need it.

Build Your Portfolio.

Consider the last 6-12 months and pull together case studies. No matter what job you have, you have case studies. Capture things like results, what you contributed, what you learned, and how you would improve if you took this on again.

Connect with Your Network.

Don’t wait until you need something from your connections. Stay in touch. Keep close connections with those who have left your company, industry, and city. Build connections outside your direct work/industry. Sometimes when a layoff happens people realize all their connections are in the same down-market situation.

Figure Out Your Unique Difference.

What makes you stand out. Use this difference to make a positive impact today and you’ll have examples of your superpower if/when it comes time to look for another role.

Take Pause.

Take some time to think about your career. Consider what you like and what you might want to change if you have the opportunity? Would you want to switch industries? Disciplines? Consider if there are steps you could start taking to move in that direction.
