This morning, I listened to a great book summary on the Next Big Idea Podcast titled One Leadership Skill That Matters Most.

It featured the book, The Power of Mattering: How Leaders Can Create a Culture of Significance.

The episode is worth a listen. I added the book to my TBR list immediately.

That said, I’d tweak the title and remove the word “leaders.”

Yes, it’s packed with insight for leaders.

But what I heard applies to everyone.

We all impact others… at work, at home, in life.

My Takeaway

We all need to feel we matter.

That what we do makes a difference.

That someone notices. And that’s the key.

Someone must notice.

Notice what we do well. Notice we are struggling. Notice what we care about.

The only way they can let us know we matter is if they notice.

The key is… we are the “someone” for others.

We each have the power to notice what’s going on in the lives of those around us.

We can let them know they matter.

A Shift in Perspective

Gratitude has been a big focus for me in recent years.

Being thankful for the gifts in my life.

This episode reminded me to go one step further.

Not just be thankful… but tell people they matter.

Show them the impact they’ve made. Acknowledge their progress. Reflect back their significance.

Your Turn

Have you thought much about the concept of mattering?

How could you notice what is going on with someone in your life and help them see how that matters?

At work, how could you tell someone that an action they took had a positive impact on you…that it mattered?
