Suzy Welch adapted the idea to the four horsemen from the apocalypse to living our values.

Before you find out what they are, you can take her quiz here to learn what’s holding you back.

From there, you can learn more them.

The Four Horsemen: Economic security, expediency, expectations, and events

As I went online looking for a summary from her to share, I found an older video.

In this session, Suzy talks about the six reasons we abandon our values.

Not four, but six.

After watching, I realize she has collapsed three into one.

Expectations were originally – Expectations, Eyeballs, and Ecosystem

My Perspective

I think the four are easier to remember and tie to the memorable Four Horseman.

However, there are so many people who struggle with expectations that I like the deeper dive.

In this framework, here is what each of the three means:

Expectations – Parents, society, cultural, and more. We put these expectations we assume people have on ourselves and can hold us back from living a life aligned with our values.

Eyeballs – How you think your decisions will look to other people. This one is all about the optics of what other people will think about your job, your house, and anything else about your life.

Ecosystem – This is about those you love. Parents, partners, children, and all others close to you. She discusses how we live against our values because we love them and this can cause us to not live authentically and true to our own values.

Your Turn

Do you see how these things have caused you to live against your values?

Do you prefer the four or six version?

Which of these do you need to work on the most?
