Yesterday, we talked about how flexibility and autonomy come into play at work.

The relationship between employer and employee varies based on the time and place structure of the organization.

In addition to considering flexibility and autonomy at work, we can consider how the dimensions might come into play outside of work as well.

In this context, we work with spouses, family, and friends to provide structure to our day to day lives.

My Perspective

Many of us likely have evenings and weekends that are flexible.

We always eat dinner, but the exact time might vary based on commitments and schedules.

We know we want to go out to dinner on Saturday night, but the location might be flexible.

The dimension that we don’t tend to think about at home is ensuring that we also have autonomy.

These are pockets of time each day and/or on the weekend where you have the space to spend time doing whatever you choose.

For some, this could be going to lunch with a friend on a Saturday.

Others may choose to use an hour each day of the week for exercise, reading, or working on a personal project or hobby.

Your Turn

When you think about your non-work life, are the days flexible?

Do you have time during the week and on weekends when you have time autonomy?

What do you enjoy doing during the times you have time autonomy?
